All About Almond Meal!
What is Almond Meal?
Almond meal is often used in baking as an alternative to flour—particularly for those who are gluten intolerant. It's wheat-free and makes food soft and delicious once it's baked!
Almond meal is made from finely ground almonds and is exceptionally high in micronutrients, including Vitamin E and Magnesium. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, helping protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals—compounds formed when our bodies convert food into energy. Magnesium helps the body improve blood sugar control, lowers blood pressure, and can aid in muscle recovery.
Almond meal is high in protein (21% by weight) and low in carbohydrates. It's an excellent source of healthy monounsaturated fats and contains fibre, manganese, copper and phosphorus.
What's the Difference Between Almond Meal and Almond Flour?
Some might say they're the same - but technically, they're wrong!
Almond meal and almond flour are both made up of, you guessed it, ground almonds.
The difference between the two is that almond meal is made from unpeeled almonds, but almond flour is made from blanched almonds that have been briefly immersed in boiling water. This leads to different grain sizes and looks - with almond skin present in almond meal.
Almond meal and almond flour are commonly used in different recipes. Almond meal has higher fibre, mineral, and antioxidant levels than almond flour.
It's readily available at most supermarkets - or if you're feeling adventurous, you can make it at home!
