A Guide to Plant-Based Protein Powder Blends

Plant-based protein blends combine the benefits of multiple plant-based proteins.

Rice protein is a particularly beneficial addition to most plant-based protein blends due to its high protein, low fat and low carbohydrate content. It also contains high alanine, arginine, glutamic acid and tyrosine levels.

Pea protein is included in most plant-based protein blends. It’s high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and contains high levels of serine and tryptophan.

What’s the Difference Between Plant-Based Protein and Animal Protein?

Organic plant-based protein powders have a lower protein content and lower levels of leucine and essential amino acids (EAAs) than animal proteins. Animal proteins are more similar to the proteins in our body, allowing them to be readily used faster.

However, plant-based protein blends are a compelling alternative to animal proteins. They are a complete protein source and offer a balanced spectrum of amino acids. They can also be comparable to whey proteins regarding muscle growth and recovery.

How do Plant-Based Protein Blends Compare in Taste?

In the last decade, plant-based protein blends have become more mainstream. While they’re typically not as creamy as whey protein, the increasing popularity of plant-based protein powders has significantly improved their taste and texture.

Rice proteins are often hard and gritty, so pea proteins are typically added to help smoothen the blend and improve the texture. Natural sweeteners are usually added to help counteract the bitterness sometimes found in other plant-based protein blends.

Why Make the Switch to Plant-Based Protein Powder Blends?

Rice and pea protein blends are void of animal products and generally won’t contain soy and lactose; they’re virtually allergy-free! That’s why plant-based protein blends are ideal for vegans, vegetarians, and lactose-intolerant or sensitive people.

Plant-based protein blends can also be a more ethical and sustainable option. They require far less C02, land and water during production than their animal counterparts.

Plant-Based Protein Blend FAQs

What are Plant Based Vegan Protein Powder Blends?

Plant-based vegan protein powders combine purified and refined plant proteins. Peas, rice, soy and mung beans are common plant proteins.

These are usually extracted using water, heat and filtration. The liquid matter is then dried and further refined. The final result is a powdered protein product that contains between 50% and 90% pure protein.

Are Plant-Based Vegan Protein Powders as Good for Building Muscle as Dairy Protein Powders?

This is a particularly controversial question that sparks serious debate in the industry. However, the general consensus is that plant-based vegan protein powders aren’t as effective in building muscle as dairy proteins.

Dairy proteins have a better spread of amino acids, a high PCDAA score, and greater bioavailability. They are also known to taste better, with a flavour that can be compared to a milkshake.

However, studies show that plant-based proteins require a larger dose to optimise muscle growth.

So, the good news is that once the dose is increased and key BCAA levels are reached, plant-based protein powders can be just as effective as dairy proteins.

Are Plant-Based Protein Powders Lactose-Free?

Lactose is a carbohydrate (or sugar) found in dairy.

Our Australian plant-based protein powders don’t contain lactose, which makes them ideal for those following a dairy-free or lactose-free diet.

Do Plant-Based Protein Powders Contain Fat?

Yes, however, the fat content of plant-based protein powders varies and depends on the plant source. Rice and soy proteins are very low in fat, but pea protein is made up of approximately 5-6% fat.

Do Plant-Based Protein Powders Contain Cholesterol?

Plant-based protein powders derived from peas, soy and rice are cholesterol-free.
